How Maryland Donors Cancel Insurance After Donating a Car

Wait until pickup and title hand-off are complete, then handle plates and cancel using that donation date safely.

Cancel insurance only after the car has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Do not cancel early. Until those steps are complete, you may still legally own the vehicle, and an uninsured loss could be your problem.

After pickup, handle plates and registration first if the Maryland DMV requires it. Then call your insurer, give the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date, remove or cancel coverage, ask for any prorated refund, and keep written confirmation.

The right cancellation sequence

1

Confirm pickup and title hand-off

Start here. Make sure the vehicle has actually been picked up and that you handed off the properly signed title or other required ownership documents. If pickup is still pending, keep the insurance active. A car sitting in your driveway, on the street, or in a lot can still be damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss before the donation transfer is complete.

2

Handle plates and registration

Before calling your insurer, deal with the plates and registration if your state process requires it. Some states require plates to be returned or registration to be canceled before insurance ends. Others allow insurance cancellation after the sale or donation record is updated. If you are unsure which sequence applies to your vehicle, check the Maryland DMV and follow that order. Keep any plate return or registration receipt.

3

Call with the donation date

Call your insurance company when pickup and title hand-off are complete. Tell the representative the vehicle was donated through Chesapeake Chariots. Give the pickup and title-transfer date as the effective date for the change. If those happened on different dates, ask the insurer what documentation it needs and use the date that matches the completed transfer record.

4

Remove or cancel coverage

If you have a multi-car policy, ask to remove only the donated vehicle. Do not cancel the whole policy unless you truly do not need the remaining coverage. If this was your only car, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you expect to drive or own another vehicle soon, ask about keeping continuous coverage so you do not create a coverage gap.

5

Request refund and proof

If you prepaid your premium, ask whether a prorated refund is due from the effective cancellation or removal date. Refund handling depends on your policy terms and payment status, so ask for the amount and how it will be returned. Before you hang up, request written confirmation showing the vehicle removed or policy canceled, the effective date, and any refund or balance information.

Records to keep together

Keep one small file for the donation, insurance, and vehicle records. Include the pickup receipt if you have one, a copy or photo of the signed title, plate or registration paperwork, the insurer’s written confirmation, and any refund notice. Save the name of the insurance representative and the date you called. If you still need to complete ownership-release paperwork, use our separate guide: Release of Liability After Donating Your Car. Good records make it easier to answer later questions from an insurer, tax preparer, or motor vehicle office.

Common questions

Can I cancel insurance before the tow truck arrives?

No. Keep coverage active until pickup is complete and the title has been handed off. If you cancel early, the car may be uninsured while you still own it. Some states also treat insurance lapses on active registrations as a compliance problem, so do not end coverage just because pickup is scheduled.

Do I need to turn in plates before canceling insurance?

It depends on the state process and your registration status. In some places, plates or registration must be handled before insurance is canceled. In others, the donation or transfer record may come first. If you are not sure, contact the motor vehicle office before canceling coverage and keep the receipt.

What if the donated vehicle is on a multi-car policy?

Ask the insurer to remove the donated vehicle only. The other vehicles should stay insured if you still own or drive them. Confirm that the change is effective on the pickup/title-transfer date, and ask the insurer to send an updated declarations page or written confirmation for your records.

Will I get a refund after canceling or removing the car?

Possibly. If you paid ahead, your insurer may owe a prorated refund for unused premium after the effective date. The amount depends on your policy terms, billing status, and any remaining balance. Ask for the refund calculation in writing so you can match it to your bank or card statement.
