How the car donation process works
Start with the 2-minute donation form or a call
Begin by completing the quick online donation form for Chesapeake Chariots or by calling Heritage for the Blind directly. You will be asked for simple information: your name, contact details, the Maryland pickup address, the vehicle year, make, model, mileage if known, and general condition. It is okay if the car does not run, has been sitting in a driveway, or needs repairs. The goal is simply to confirm the vehicle and prepare the pickup request. Heritage for the Blind is a real 501(c)(3) charity, EIN 58-2164446, and the donation process starts with no fee or obligation.
A coordinator calls back within 1–2 business hours
After you submit the form or call, a donation coordinator typically follows up within 1–2 business hours to confirm the details and schedule free towing. They will help choose a pickup window that works for your home, apartment complex, office, repair shop, storage lot, or other Maryland location. Donors in busy metro areas such as Baltimore, Columbia, Silver Spring, Rockville, Annapolis, Towson, and Frederick often have flexible scheduling options. You can ask questions during this call, including what to do with plates, keys, title, or access instructions if the vehicle is parked behind a gate.
Your free tow is scheduled at your Maryland location
A licensed tow truck is dispatched to the pickup address at no cost to you. In most Maryland metro areas, pickup is available the same day or the next business day, depending on schedule and location. The driver can usually collect cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, motorcycles, and some specialty vehicles, running or not. Before the tow, remove personal items from the glove box, trunk, console, and seat pockets. If you have keys, keep them handy. If the vehicle is at a repair shop, apartment garage, or curbside space, tell the coordinator so the driver knows exactly where to go.
You sign the title over when the vehicle is picked up
At pickup, the driver will confirm the vehicle and collect the signed title. In Maryland, the title is the key document that allows the donation to move forward, so have it ready if it is available. Do not worry if you are unsure where to sign; the coordinator or towing partner can provide guidance before pickup so you do not complete the wrong section. You should also remove your license plates and follow Maryland MVA guidance for plate return or transfer. Once the paperwork is complete, the tow truck takes the vehicle away, and you pay nothing.
The vehicle is sold through auction or a parts reseller
After pickup, the vehicle is transported to an auction, salvage channel, or parts reseller, depending on its condition and market demand. A running commuter car from Gaithersburg may take a different path than a non-running SUV in Dundalk or a damaged truck near Waldorf, but the objective is the same: convert the vehicle into charitable proceeds. Those proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, supporting services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Heritage also helps people find potential benefit resources, including SSI, LIHEAP, Medicare Extra Help, and Section 8; donors can check eligibility tools at nhftb.org/finder.
Your tax receipt is mailed after the vehicle sells
Once the vehicle sells, your tax documentation is prepared and mailed. If the vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind provides IRS Form 1098-C. If it sells for $500 or less, you receive a written acknowledgment. The full donation process, from form submission to mailed tax receipt, typically takes about 2–6 weeks, depending on pickup timing, sale processing, and mail delivery. Keep the receipt with your tax records and consult a tax advisor if you have questions about claiming a charitable deduction. Chesapeake Chariots makes the steps easy, but tax situations can vary.
